RE: Anti-Theft Measures You’ve Taken with Your Toy Hauler

Nothing other than paying my insurance premium. I only use two normal Masterlocks on the ramp and lock the OEM deadbolt on door. Still have the CH751 locks on compartments. Even if the locks are replaced the doors can still be easily opened with a large prybar. A thief is more likely to use a prybar than a key anyhow.

RE: In Line battery shut off

The previous posts are missing a major safety issue for a trailer. The disconnect should go in the positive line for your safety and the safety of whoever may tow the trailer in the future.
Here is the reason; if the switch is in the ground and is off while towing, your emergency disconnect braking system will NOT work. If the switch is in the positive line you can wire the emergency braking system around the switch so it is always energized. It is illegal and dangerous to have an inoperable emergency disconnect braking system.
Good point, but it is not "a major safety issue" on my trailer I have only one positive wire and the break away connects at the junction box. So, on my trailer it doesn't matter and I don't tow with the battery off.
What about the next owner of a trailer? What if someone forgets to turn the power on before towing? Be safe and make sure the emergency braking system will always work no matter what position the switch is in. Good engineering in the first place can save a lot of problems and heartaches later.
I can't imagine any manufacturer or dealer accepting the liability for a braking system that may not work depending on the position of a switch. Any modifications we make should emulate that philosophy and be safe. Of course there are exceptions and we all know that the manufacturers screw up on occasion also.

RE: mileage?

I get 7-9 mpg running between 55-60 mph. It appears from the posts I read that most all gas engines get similar mileage maxing out at about 10-11. They all suck fuel while towing.
I'm sure some diesel owners will tell their tales about the amazing mileage their diesels get. Diesels get better mileage but fuel also costs more. Currently around here diesel fuel is 175% of gasoline cost. The primary advantage to a diesel is in the towing ability, additional mileage is minor.

RE: A farewell to rent

The first mirrors are what we used to call "west coast" mirrors. They work but there are better ones similar in style but are wider rather than taller. The mirrors you pictured create a large blind spot at about 10 or 11 o'clock.
The second mirrors are alright, some people like them. The advantage is that they are removable.
How about these mirrors?

RE: ALL AMERICAN CAMPERS FARMINGDALE NJ SERVICE CLOSED

Sounds like a dealer that will be closing once all remaining inventory is gone. I doubt that they have any intentions of being open this time next year.

Glad you found the problem. On 11-3-08 I posted in your original thread; "Maybe a small LP gas leak?"
Make sure you keep that detector working.

RE: Too much weight distribution?

Are all bars for different weight classifications solid? If so, how are they any different?
To my knowledge they are all solid. The weight capacity difference is in the dimensions and possibly metallurgy. Read at this link about the Equal-i-zer specifications. Look at the spring arm size.

RE: Fresh Water Fittings

My Weekend Warrior uses a 1&1/2" waste valve between the two fifty gallon tanks. It is just a valve, it is not a sewer valve unless you put sewage in it.
It is called a waste valve because that is its most common usage.

RE: Water pump wont work with antifreeze

My water tank connection is easily accessible. I just unscrew the connector from the tank and place it in a pan of antifreeze. That way I am able to trick the pump into pumping antifreeze. :B Pump doesn't know what it is pumping.

RE: Batteries

...I've always herd that the more times you run them down then recharge them the longer they last...and one of the people who told me this was the battery represintive for MAX batteries...
:B Isn't that representative in the business of SELLING more batteries? Like others have stated, the batteries are only good for X numbers of cycles. You are shortening the life of your batteries and wasting electric.
Turn the lights off, disconnect all loads from the batteries and charge once a month. The alternative is to disconnect your inverter/converter and use a battery maintainer such as the "Battery Minder" or "Battery Tender". That way you can leave them connected all the time while stored.

RE: Too much weight distribution?

Many responders are assuming the actual TW is 550#. I have to ask, is that the actual weight according to a scale or is that the manufacturers number? Manufacturers lie! My listed dry TW is 600#, actual TW while going down the road fully loaded is 1,100#.
You need to know the real TW of your fully loaded trailer. Purchase a WD setup that is slightly heavier than your ACTUAL FULLY LOADED WEIGHT.
If your actual TW is 550#, don't buy the hitch. Either you won't get satisfactory performance from it or you could bend your tongue!

RE: Unbreakable Dinnerware

The DW bought a nice Melamine dish and bowl set at Camping World on clearance a year or so ago. We use hard plastic water glasses from a restaurant supply store and regular ceramic cups.
BTW, tomato stains can be removed from tupperware and other similar items simply by setting the item in the sun for a day. No poisons like chlorine bleach needed. Can even be done inside on a windowsill.

RE: Drying out black tank?

I installed my own. All I did is dump normally and leave tank empty. It doesn't really need to be dry, all the work takes place on the outside! Just needs to be empty. If taking it in to be done, I would suggest you do as JFG said.

RE: Anode small water seeping?

Teflon tape works fine for mine. Leakage is NOT normal. Retape till about three layers thick and tighten just till it doesn't leak. You can use Teflon tape and pipe dope together if you wish, apply the tape first. The system normally sees less than 60 PSI so it doesn't need to be very tight.
BTW it is a water heater, not a hot water heater. Why would you heat water that is already hot? :B

RE: Not another 6 volt vs 12 volt question!!!! Groan!

I'll have to admit my Interstates probably didn't last due to poor maintence....it is so hard to add water to the batteries and I only did it every couple mths.
I have checked the battery water twice this year and only added once. Some charging systems are better than others, I guess I got lucky.
If you have room to use it this battery filler can make the job of filling easier. Pick one up at your local auto parts store for $10 or less. Fills the battery perfectly every time and with only using one hand, not three.

RE: Fuel economy

Good to know, thanks for the info.
The "myth" about dirty air filters came about because it was definitely true back in the day when engines had carburetors. With modern fuel injection, the electronic brain reduces the fuel flow if the air supply is restricted. It may not cause massive increased fuel usage but it will cost you power output. Old carbureted engines didn't have that brain.

RE: Sirius & XM Radio Updates

I hope they don't replace XM's great bluegrass with Sirius's lame lame lame bluegrass. That was a major reason we left Dish TV.
Almost the only station I listen to is XM 14-Bluegrass Junction. So far it appears that the only change is moving the disc jockeys around and adding the Sirius DJ to XM 14. They stated that they will still play one gospel song per hour and the weekend gospel set will be repeated on Wednesday now.

RE: RV flag poles

I use a 10' section of 1/2" PVC for a flag pole. It slides into a 3/4" section of PVC mounted to my ladder. Total height is about 18' from ground. Flag can be seen in the picture in my signature.
